2. JEM Energy
JEM Energy has been serving the people of Hampshire since 2015, which is long enough to develop a reputation.
Fortunately, James Rodwell and Alex Payne's company enjoys an excellent relationship with its customers, who have given the firm an excellent rating on Google and a near-perfect set of reviews on Checkatrade.
This is largely down to the team's expertise, excellent communication, and detailed designs, which makes sense considering Rodwell has more than a decade of experience in the renewable industry.
JEM Energy also installs heat pumps, if you want to make the most of your new solar panels.
I recently had solar panels and a battery system installed by Jem Energy. I was really pleased with the experience both during the order process and the fitting. The team of four who installed everything were friendly and professional. No hesitation at all in recommending.

3. Volt Energy Southern
This Waterlooville-based company is one of the only installers in Hampshire to be approved by the MCS, NAPIT, TrustMark, and HIES or RECC – and that's no mean feat.
Founded in 2022, the business is co-owned by locals Gus Stephens, Robert Pittman, and Mason Ling.
Pittman has led teams in the renewable energy sphere for five years, while Stevens has spent seven years working in the sector, so they know what they're doing.
The company has also embedded itself in the community, having sponsored local football team AFC Portchester Ladies and events at children's wards in Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth.
Volt Energy Southern were very careful to explain and demonstrate the best solar panels and battery system to meet our needs. The installation was quick, very neat and tidy, carried out by experienced, competent engineers using plain English. I most definitely recommend Volt Energy Southern.

4. Ecovolt Renewables
This family-run business is owned by Katherine and Michael Beckett.
Michael spent decades fixing yachts all over the world before deciding to settle down in Petersfield and open a renewable installation company in 2022.
The qualified electrician engages with the community at events organised by groups like the Petersfield Climate Action Network.
The company's site explains that Michael "takes great pleasure in the process of designing and installing impeccable energy solutions."
These guys are great. I had solar and batteries installed and they couldn't have been more easy to work with. They had to dig trenches for the wiring, some of it under newly laid landscaping and pathways - they tidied up so well, there was no trace of their work.

How much do solar panels cost in Hampshire?
| Property size | Annual electricity usage (kWh)* | System size (kWp) | Number of panels (450W) | Estimated cost** | Estimated cost with 5kWh battery† |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bedroom | 1,800 | 2.25 | 5 | £3,892 | £6,892 |
| 2-3 bedrooms | 2,700 | 4.5 | 10 | £7,784 | £10,784 |
| 4-5 bedrooms | 4,100 | 6.75 | 15 | £11,677 | £14,677 |
A 4.5kWp solar panel system costs £7,784 to buy and install in Hampshire, on average, according to MCS data.
For this price, you should be able to get 10 solar panels, each one with a 450-watt peak power rating.
We've also included the cost of adding a 5kWh battery, because a battery can significantly boost your solar returns.
It empowers you to use more solar-generated electricity at home – known as self-consumption – which means you can buy less electricity from the grid.
You can also join the best export tariffs and time-of-use import tariffs, and join grid flexibility services like virtual power plants.
Around 94% of new solar panel installations in the UK include a battery, according to data from Flexi-Orb and the EPVS.
Multiple factors may cause your specific solar panel system’s price to be different though, including its size, the installation’s complexity, and the installer you choose.

Are there any grants for solar panels in Hampshire?
There are solar panel grants available to Hampshire residents, mainly thanks to national government schemes, but they usually have strict eligibility criteria that targets the most underprivileged homes.
If you don’t qualify for any of these programmes and you're put off by the price of going solar, have a look at Sunsave Plus, which is available at no upfront cost.
For fixed monthly payments over 20 years, you’ll receive the best-in-class kit, full monitoring and maintenance support, and a system that can save you money from day one.
To see which schemes you might qualify for, use our grant eligibility checker.
Solar Together Hampshire
Solar Together helps residents and business owners in a specific area to secure a discount on their solar installations through collective buying.
It’s not a government grant; it's a profit-making scheme run by private Dutch company iChoosr, in collaboration with local councils.
In London, it secured 20-30% discounts for its customers, according to the Greater London Authority.
And some places have seen even larger price reductions. In Suffolk, households have reportedly saved an average of £2,000 on installation costs.
Solar Together first came to Hampshire in 2021, and its first three schemes in the county led to around 2,700 households switching to solar.
The initiative passes through the county roughly once per year, for a limited time.
Unfortunately, it comes with significant downsides. To learn more, read our comprehensive guide to Solar Together.
National grants
There are a couple of national grants that apply to residents in Hampshire – and if you’re eligible, they’re well worth considering.
Solar panels can cut your energy bills by hundreds of pounds per year, shrink your carbon footprint, and increase your property’s value, but the upfront cost is usually high.
Warm Homes: Local Grant
The Warm Homes: Local Grant (WH:LG) is a government initiative that funds measures which improve the energy efficiency and heating systems of energy-inefficient homes in England.
Qualifying households must be low-income, deprived, or receive a means-tested benefit.
In 2025, the scheme awarded just over £26 million to a consortium including every local authority in Hampshire, as well as more than a dozen in West Sussex, Berkshire, and further afield.
All these local authorities can allocate up to £30,000 in funding to qualifying homes – £15,000 for energy performance upgrades like solar panels, and £15,000 for low-carbon heating.
If you live in one of these areas and the council decides your household could meet the grant's eligibility criteria, a staff member will contact you.
Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)
The government’s main initiative for cutting domestic emissions is available to low-income and vulnerable households whose residents are on certain benefits – though the scheme ends in March 2026.
ECO4 isn’t a government grant; it instead forces large energy suppliers to install energy-saving measures in underprivileged households.
You may be able to get a free solar panel system through ECO4, but only if your home is electrically heated, like 11.2% of households in England.
For more information, check out our full guide to ECO4.
How many homes in Hampshire have solar panels?
52,009 homes in Hampshire have solar panels certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), as of January 2026.
That means 6.7% of 776,000 households have gone solar, across the county's 13 local authorities.
This is considerably higher than the 5.6% of all UK households that have bought solar panels – which makes sense, since Hampshire is one of the sunniest places in the country.
| Local authority | Homes with solar panels | % of homes with solar panels |
|---|---|---|
| Basingstoke & Deane | 4,616 | 6.03% |
| East Hampshire | 5,567 | 10.56% |
| Eastleigh | 4,347 | 7.64% |
| Fareham | 3,824 | 7.87% |
| Gosport | 2,093 | 5.83% |
| Hart | 3,079 | 7.7% |
| Havant | 3,517 | 6.56% |
| New Forest | 6,791 | 8.75% |

| Rushmoor | 1,546 | 3.93% |
| Southampton | 4,503 | 4.4% |
| Test Valley | 4,183 | 7.65% |
| Winchester | 5,413 | 10.47% |
| Total: 52,009 | Average: 6.7% |
Is Hampshire sunny enough for solar panels?
Hampshire receives a lot of sunlight compared to most of the UK, with the level of solar irradiance in the county coming in at 18% higher than the UK average.
For instance, the Guildhall in Winchester sees 1,287 kilowatt-hours per square metre (kWh/m²) on average, each year. This figure will vary slightly across the county, but it’s a pretty good indicator.
'Kilowatt-hours per square metre' refers to how much energy is travelling from the sun, across 93 million miles of space, to a specific square metre on Earth.
These figures are taken from the European Commission's Photovoltaic Geographical Information System, which provides regularly updated solar irradiance statistics.
When it comes to solar panel output there are a number of factors which affect how much energy they produce, but solar irradiance is a big one.
As you’d expect, the more intense the sunlight that hits your panels, the higher the kWh/m², and the more solar electricity your installation will produce – leading to higher savings.

Typical solar panel output in Hampshire
| System size (kWp) | No. of 450W panels | Roof direction | Annual output (kWh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5 | 10 | East | 3,891 |
| 4.5 | 10 | South | 4,987 |
| 4.5 | 10 | West | 3,688 |
These figures, which are all based on a home in Winchester, are taken from the European Commission's Photovoltaic Geographical Information System.
We've used a 4.5kWp system because it'll usually produce enough electricity to at least match the average UK household's electricity consumption, which is 3,400kWh per year.
When your solar panels generate more electricity than you can use or store in your battery, you can sell this energy to the grid through one of the best SEG rates.
While this will happen with almost every system during summer, installations in Hampshire should be able to enjoy this additional income stream more often.
Please note: you won’t necessarily generate as much solar electricity with your system, as this design is for a specific property that may be different to yours – but it should give you a rough idea of what’s possible in Hampshire.
Is it worth getting solar panels in Hampshire?
It’s absolutely worth getting solar panels in Hampshire, even more so than it is in most places in the UK – as 6.7% of households in the county have discovered.
If you’re put off by the upfront cost, you could look into accessing a national or local grant.
However, if you can't qualify for any of these, consider Sunsave Plus, our all-in-one solar and battery solution that’s tailored to your home, and delivered as a monthly subscription with no upfront cost.
