The grid can work harder for you

Wind farm photo

More than half of the UK’s electricity comes from renewables, like solar and wind. That's great news, but it makes it harder for the grid to stay balanced between supply and demand. And keeping that balance is important for the grid to work safely and reliably.

This balance between supply and demand also affects people’s bills. It changes the price of every kilowatt-hour (kWh) all day. Which is why electricity is usually cheaper at night, when fewer people are using it. But most people pay the same price for every kilowatt-hour they use – because that’s what their tariff locks them in to.

With the right home energy tech and the right tariffs, it’s possible for you to access these changing, cheaper prices. And it’s also possible to earn from helping the grid stay balanced.

Sunsave Sona makes it easy to do both.

Save more without lifting a finger

Sunsave Sona works in the background every day, so you get the most out of your system – while helping the grid stay balanced.

Charge up on cheap energy, automatically

Electricity price over 24 hours

Sunsave Sona gets you the best savings by optimising your battery. It does this by getting to know how you use your energy.

It uses this knowledge to work out when’s best to charge your battery on cheap electricity, when’s best to power your home with it, and when it’s worth selling your excess energy.

You save by avoiding more expensive electricity. And you earn by selling your excess to the grid. All without lifting a finger.

Get paid to help the grid

To help balance supply and demand, the grid looks for extra capacity when it has extra electricity it needs to store. An individual household’s battery can’t give them much capacity, but a network of them can.

Sunsave Sona connects your battery to other Sunsave customers’ batteries, so they can work together to create a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). The grid borrows the extra capacity our VPP creates – and pays everyone involved for helping out.

We guarantee your earnings

Chart showing monthly VPP payouts

As part of our Virtual Power Plant, we guarantee you’ll earn at least £15 a month for the first 12 months with Home Battery, and 18 months with Solar & Battery Plus. And once we’ve paid all the guaranteed amounts, we share out anything extra.

Since we launched, we’ve paid out £23 a month on average – and the global VPP market is expected to be five times as valuable in 2033 as it was in 2025.

I did think about getting solar panels before, but because of the upfront cost, it just wasn't possible.
